Travel Pictures Gallery.com - Thailand - Ayutthaya
a series of travel images from Thailand, Ayutthaya, a city in the central plains of Thailand, some 85 km north of Bangkok. It is the capital city of the province of the same name. It was the ancient capital of a Siamese kingdom that existed from 1350 to 1767. Ayutthaya became the capital after Sukothai. It was a wealthy and splendid city at its peak and had more than a million inhabitants by the year 1700, the largest city in the world at that time. This all came to an end when the Burmese invaded the city an burned it to the ground. Many ruins of temples and palaces still remain and are well worth exploring. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 for its historic significance.
