Founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizzaro in 1535 many parts are very modern these days and the city has a population of nearly 10 million people. The historic city center offers some pretty churches, monasteries and palaces from colonial times; Lima was the seat of the Spanish for nearly 300 years.
