Travel Pictures Gallery.com - Peru - Cuzco
a series of travel images from Peru. Cuzco (or Cusco) is a city in southeastern Peru near the Urubamba Valley in the Andes mountain range. Situated at an altitude of around 3400 m. it was the capital of the Inca Empire from the 13th century until the arrival of the Spanish in 16th-century. It was declared a Unesco World Heritage site in 1983. In the northern outskirts of the city is Sacsayhuaman (Royal Eagle), a fortress and temple complex constructed by the Incas. Its massive, well-built walls are an impressive testimony to Inca power and also the skills of Inca architects. Every year at summer solstice the Inti Raymi, or Festival of the Sun is held here.
