It's also the place of a Maya site with temples and ruins perched on the cliffs, once an important port in the days of the Mayas. Playa del Carmen is a resort town just to the north of Tulum, it is at the center of the Mayan Riviera and offers a more relaxed atmosphere than its bigger neighbour to the north Cancun, a nice way to end your travels in Mexico.
