a series of travel images from Mexico, Palenque, in Chiapas state in the east of Mexico is a major archeological site with the ruins of a Mayan city dating from about 226 BC to around 799 AD. The temples set in a thick jungle still have this feel of discovery when you visit the site at an early hour. Nearby Palenque are the Cascada Misol Ha Waterfall and the Cataratas de Agua Azul, Blue Water Falls. Bonampak and Yaxchilan are fascinating Maya ruins and temples near the border with Guatemala. Yaxchilan has a beautiful setting on the Usumacinta River, Bonampak is famous for its murals. Palenque, Yaxchitlan and Bonampak are on the Unesco World Heritage list.
