Travel Pictures Gallery.com - Africa - Mali - Timbuktu
a series of travel images from Africa, Mali, Timbuktu. Timbuktu (also Tombouctou or Timbuctu) is a city some 12 km north of the Niger River on the edge of the Sahara desert. The city has a long history as a trading outpost that linked black Africa below the Sahara Desert with Berber and Islamic traders throughout north Africa. It has a sort of mystic reputation linking it with distant and exotic lands. It was once the capital of the Mali Empire, and was home to Mansa Musa, the king of the Mali Empire who is regarded as the richest person in history. The Dyingerey Ber mosque, and the Sangkore mosque with their adobe, mud brick architecture seem to be erected straight from the desert surrounding the town. Timbuktu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. As from 2012 the region had serious problems with jihadist fighters, make sure to check the present situation when planning a visit.
