Its relatively isolated situation on the banks of the Mekong and Nam Khan River saved it from twentieth century concrete and hi-rise city construction and nowadays it's an enchanting place dotted with Buddhist temples and restored villas from the French colonial past. In 1995 it became a Unesco World Heritage site because of its historic significance
