Travel Pictures Gallery.com - Guatemala - Tikal
a series of travel images from Guatemala, Tikal National Park. Known to the inhabitamts as the city Yax Mutal, Tikal lies in the heart of the jungle, surrounded by lush vegetation. It's one of the major sites of Mayan civilization, inhabited from the 6th century B.C. to the 10th century A.D. As the site is somewhat remote it still has this great feeling of discovery when strolling around the grounds with temples and palaces surrounded by jungle while toucans and howler monkeys roam in the tree canopy. Located in Peten Province and embedded in the larger Maya Biosphere Reserve Tikal National Park is listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site for both its cultural and natural importance.
