Even more important than Christmas in Guatemala, Semana Santa commemorates the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. Numerous processions are held in the streets with vast floats which sometimes require up to a 100 people to carry. Colourful alfombras (flower carpets) are laid in the streets and the whole town is in a festive mood.
