Travel Pictures Gallery.com - Greece - Crete - Heraklion and Knossos
a series of travel images from Greece, Heraklion and Knossos. Heraklion is the major city and the capital of Crete with around 225.00 inhabitants. Nearby is ancient Knossos, the city of the 3000 year old Minoan civilization. The Archeological Museum has an extensive collection of artefacts of this period. The Minoan civilization was a Bronze Age Aegean civilization on the island of Crete and other Aegean Islands, flourishing from around 3000 BC until its decilne around 1100. It was one of the first advanced civilizations in Europe. The Minoan palace of Knossos is rightly famous and an impressive sight. Heraklion city itself has some interesting buildings and leftovers from the Venetian period.
