It is here at the base of the Giza plateau that the pharaohs built the Great Pyramids which, together with the Sfinx, are nowadays considered one of the worlds great wonders. These are the archetypical pyramid structures of the ancient Egyptian civilisations which have become the iconic image of Egypt. Since the 2011 turbulence tourism has been at a low level and was gradually recovering when in 2020 the pandemic started to wreak its havoc. Recent problems with Israël and Gaza are keeping western tourists away for the moment; hopefully the situation will improve soon to help Egypts struggling tourism industry, an important source of income.
