With over 17 million inhabitants it is also the most densily populated city in the world. The heavy traffic, noise and bustle can make it a dazzling experience for the traveller. Situated on the Nile river it is famous for its rich history which can be experienced in the splendid Islamic and Coptic medieval parts of the old city. The Egyptian Museum has a huge collection of artefacts from ancient Egypt which is on every visitors itinerary. In early 2024 the new Grand Egyptian museum near the Giza (Gizeh) pyramids is expected to be opened. In the old city the Khan el Khalili bazaar is an experience not to be missed when visiting Cairo.
