a series of travel images from Africa, Egypt, Aswan. A city in the south of Egypt, some 680km (425 miles) south of Cairo, close to Aswan Dam and Lake Nasser. With about 270.000 inhabitants Aswan is home to a large community of Nubian people, some of them relocated after the flooding of Lake Nasser. It was the ancient Egyptians gateway to Africa. The granite quarries from which the obelisks where hewn are near Aswan. Interesting sites are the Nobles Tombs just outiside the city in the desert, Elephantine Island, and several Nubian villages which can be visited. The Isis temple of Philea was relocated to a nearby island in Lake Nasser. Aswan is also known for the Cataract Hotel made famous in the Agatha Christie story "Death on the Nile". It's the place to make a Felucca trip or a Nile River cruise.
