The town of Alausi is the starting point of the most famous train ride in Ecuador, It is part of the former Quito-Guayaquil railway that is gradually being restored. These days its more tourists than local people on the train and travelling on top of the train is no longer allowed at present but the highland scenery is spectacular nevertheless.
