a series of travel images from Central America - Costa Rica, Tortuguero. Tortuguero National Park (Parque Nacional Tortuguero) is located in the north east on the Caribbean coast. Tortugeuro means turtle catcher, Green sea turtles, Leatherbacks and Hawksbill turtles come here to nest at the beach and people used to hunt these for their meat. Turtles are now well protected and access to the park is only with licensed guided tours. The extensive creeks of the national park have a great biodiversity with ample birds, iguanas, monkeys and lizards. All transport around Tortuguero is by boat; a boat trip in the early morning usually offers spectacular wildlife views. The hike to Cerro Tortuguero is at present closed to visitors to protect the environment.
