Founded in 1736 by the Spanish, San José does not have a great deal of colonial architecture compared to other places in Latin America but it is a nice place to find what makes local people tick before heading of to other parts of the country. Have some Latino food or a drink at the Central Market (Mercado Central) or visit the Butterfly Garden to get a sample of Costa Rican nature.
