La Fortuna de San Carlos is a small town in the north of Costa Rica mostly famous for the nearby active Arenal Volcano (1,633 m). The Arenal Volcano National Park with the Laguna Arenal (lake) offers spectacular views and a swim in the rainforest near the Cataratas Fortuna waterfall is not to be missed. To the north of La Fortuna, near the border with Nicaragua, we visit the Refugio de Vida Silvestre Caño Negro (Wildlife Refuge). We make a bout tour on the Rio Frio in Caño Negro seeing crocodiles, sloths, iguanas, the Basilisk lizard and lots of birds.
