a series of travel images from China, Beijing; the Summer Palacae is a vast complex of lakes, gardens and palaces dating from the Qing Dynasty (1644 tot 1912) It was the Imperial Garden during that period. It has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site naming it 'a masterpiece of Chinese landscape garden design'. It is situated to the north-west of Beijing city and it covers an expanse of 2.9 square kilometres. A bit further out is Fragrant Hills or Xiangshan Park, also a former imperial garden.
